When reporting a problem, please include your macOS version, the app version and build from Qmacs Editor › About Qmacs Editor, and a short description of what you expected and what happened. The Core › Version field in Settings identifies the Rust core, which can differ from the app release. Do not include your master password or private document contents in a support request. We have no password recovery service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the app open with a blank Untitled.md?

Version 0.2.0 starts with a blank Untitled.md document in Files. Type your text, then use File › Save or Save As to choose its name and location. Open or create more documents as needed; there is no fixed document count limit.

What is the difference between Files and Vault?

Files documents are ordinary plaintext files on disk and can be edited while the vault is locked. Vault documents are saved only inside encrypted vault.qmacs. To create a protected note, unlock the vault and choose Qmacs › New Vault Note; use Save or Qmacs › Save Encrypted Vault to save it.

How do I choose the default Save As folder?

Open Settings › Files. Under Default File Folder, use Choose Folder or Use Documents. New ordinary files start in Documents until you change this preference. The vault folder is configured separately; changing the file-save folder does not move or encrypt your files.

Where are preferences stored, and why is folder access needed?

Preferences are stored in your account’s ~/.qmacs/config.json. Lock the vault, then open Settings › Files › Allow ~/.qmacs Access and select your home directory’s .qmacs folder in the native picker. This grants the sandboxed app access to save preferences there. Configuration contains settings and folder bookmarks, without document text or passwords.

How do Undo and Redo work?

Use the editor inspector’s Undo and Redo controls, or the standard Edit menu commands. Editing history belongs to each document. Locking the vault clears its loaded documents and undo histories; ordinary Files documents remain available.

What if another app changes an open file on disk?

Qmacs Editor checks for disk changes before saving. If it detects a conflict, Save stops with a visible error and keeps your unsaved edits. Use Save As with a different name to preserve both versions. To load the disk version, preserve your edits first, close the affected document, then open the disk file again. Opening a file that is already open selects its existing editor buffer. Choosing an existing destination in Save As uses the native replacement confirmation; if that destination changes again before the write, the app rejects the save.

I forgot my master password. Can you recover my vault?

We cannot recover your master password. Qmacs Editor does not persist it in configuration and has no developer recovery service. Vault contents are protected with Argon2id and XChaCha20-Poly1305; keep a secure backup and a strong password. Ordinary (non-vault) file buffers remain editable separately.

Where is my data stored?

Ordinary files stay at the locations you choose. The encrypted vault uses the app’s default local folder or a folder selected through Choose Folder on the vault screen. In a sandboxed build, its default .qmacs folder is inside the app’s local container; check the displayed vault path for the exact location. Qmacs Editor does not require an account and does not sync your documents to a server.

How do I reopen the main window after closing it?

Choose Window › Qmacs Editor Window from the menu bar, or press ⌘0. Clicking the app’s Dock icon also brings the window back.

How do I set up a supplemental unlock check?

When creating a vault, choose no additional check, TOTP, or a static-code check. For TOTP, add the displayed secret to an authenticator app and confirm the current code. A static password slot on a hardware token can supply a code, but this is not FIDO2 hardware authentication. These checks apply to normal app unlock; they do not provide an independent cryptographic factor against someone who has the vault file and master password.

How do I change my master password?

Unlock the vault, then open Settings › Security, enter a new strong password and confirmation, and choose Change Password. This re-encrypts the current vault and preserves existing encrypted snapshot data. The current vault.qmacs then requires the new password. The preceding encrypted file is retained as vault.qmacs.backup and still requires the previous password.

How are vault backups and older vaults handled?

Saving an existing vault retains the preceding encrypted file as vault.qmacs.backup in the vault folder. It is one preceding copy, so keep separate secure backups when you need a longer history. To migrate a trusted historical vault, select its folder while locked, enter its unlock details, and choose Qmacs › Import Legacy Vault. Review the import confirmation. Migration is explicit and preserves the encrypted original as a backup; legacy files lack the current authenticated metadata checks.

What are the system requirements?

The Qmacs Editor 0.2.0 distribution build requires macOS 14 or later and an Apple Silicon Mac. See the build and release information for availability and distribution details.

Troubleshooting

If the app behaves unexpectedly, first quit and relaunch it. If a vault will not unlock, confirm you are pointing at the correct vault folder (shown on the Lock screen) and that any required MFA code is current. If a problem persists, email us the details above and we will help.
